Wrinkle Softening Treatments

  • Having wrinkle softening injections using Botulinum Toxin (Botox®) on your forehead will reduce the appearance of both horizontal lines and frown lines. This can lead to a fresher, revitalised appearance, and a greater sense of confidence in your appearance.

  • Crow’s feet develop naturally in everybody as the human face ages. This is caused by a great number of factors including the natural decline in fatty tissue around the eyes as the face ages combined with habitual facial expressions. This wrinkle softening treatments helps to reduce this by relaxing the muscles in the eye area and so eliminating these lines.

  • In many day to day facial expressions, we scrunch up our face and inadvertently put a stress on our nose and surrounding area causing ‘bunny lines’. Over time these lines and wrinkles can become more pronounced when making certain expressions. These wrinkles can be softened and in some cases eliminated completely to give increase client satisfaction.

if you have any questions

  • The chin is the centre piece of the lower third of the face and is formed by the mentalis muscle. Contraction of this muscle causes a ‘cobblestoned’ appearance. This imbalance in the chin can affect the entire middle to lower third of the face. Clients rarely ask for treatment of this cobblestone pattern but more often for rejuvenation of the lower face in which relaxation of the mentalis muscle will add to patient satisfaction.

  • Vertical lines around the lips can be treated with very small doses of Botulinum Toxin. Most people call these lines ‘smoker’s lines’ but they are not necessarily from smoking. Vertical lines are actually due to both collagen thinning and tissue volume loss in the deeper levels of your skin. To really reverse them, you need dermal filler injection which replaces some of your tissue volume which is lost with age.

  • Loss of volume in the skin below the corners of the mouth can lead to a downward drooping, resulting in a permanent ‘sad’ expression. This loss of volume can suscessfully be treated with dermal fillers to restore volume. But in some instances the downward pull of the corners can be caused by a tightness of the triangularis muscle which connects the corners of the mouth to the lower jaw which as a result pulls down the corners of the mouth. By careful administration of Botulinum Toxin, relaxation of the triangularis muscle can lift the corners of the mouth so turning a “sad” into a “happy” mouth.

  • Wrinkle softening treatments are used specifically to smooth out lines and wrinkles on the face. Facial wrinkles are caused by a number of factors including repetitive expressions and muscle activity.

Over time, the skin develops obvious lines that are perceived as signs of ageing and to some people are undesirable. Botox® is the brand name of a product used to treat facial wrinkles. Several other products have since been developed for the same purpose and are now widely used including Azzalure® and Xeomin®.

All of these products are in fact almost identical and contain Botulinum Toxin Type A. Botulinum is a natural protein produced by a bacteria called Clostridum Botulinum. The protein acts on muscles to temporarily relax them. Patients and doctors have come to refer to the treatments simply as ‘Botox®’ since the procedures are performed in exactly the same way no matter what product is used.

The aim of this treatment is to create a more fresher and youthful appearance in the most gentle and natural way as possible.

  • Provided that the injections are administered by a practitioner with medical training, there are no serious risks. Any side-effects are minor and temporary, as discussed below.

Although research to date has not shown any risk to the developing foetus caused by exposure to Botulinum Toxin , in the interests of good medical practice I advise that injections are best avoided in pregnant or breastfeeding women.

  • Botulinum Toxin has been used successfully for more than thirty years. It was initially used to correct eye muscle disorders and conditions such as cerebral palsy in which muscle rigidity is a feature.

When applied as a rejuvenation technique, small quantities of Botulinum Toxin are injected underneath the skin into targeted facial muscles causing them to relax and smooth out lines and wrinkles on the face. These muscles are no longer able to move thus preventing the formation of frown lines, horizontal lines of the forehead and crow’s feet and existing lines are less pronounced due to the relaxation of the underlying muscles.
