Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating. Sweating is one of the most important ways in which the body loses heat; however, people with hyperhidrosis produce sweat in amounts far greater than needed to control their temperature.
The treatment works by blocking nerve signals to the sweat glands in the armpit area using Botulinum Toxin, thus preventing the glands from producing sweat. By keeping the skin dry, the treatment additionally helps to prevent body odour. (Body odour is formed when bacteria degrade sweat).
Prospective patients should strongly consider this treatment if their sweating bothers them, is unsightly or is not controlled by strong anti – perspirant deodorants. The amount of sweating in people can be hugely variable, from mild dampness to very obvious wet patches under the arms. This can cause embarrassment at work or socially, and it may make normal everyday activities more difficult to carry out.
Every client will have iodine and starch powder applied to the underarm area. This will form a colour reaction from cream to blue/black. This indicates where the sweat glands are and maximal sweat production. The area is then cleared from the starch powder, marked and divided up into equal areas. Using a very fine needle, Botulinum Toxin is then injected into 10 to 15 places about 1 cm apart and spread evenly in each armpit. A treatment takes approximately 15 minutes to perform. No analgesia is required.
The effects of the treatment will become apparent over the first week. The treatments on average last 4 to 8 months, depending on your metabolism. You will notice your sweating returning to its previous level as the treatment wears off.
